Kevin Heckaman is in his 1st year as head band director for Dayton HS and 20th year as a band director. He is a graduate of Hamshire-Fannett HS where he was a member of the TMEA All-State Band (’89) and All-State Orchestra (’90, ’91) on trombone. Mr. Heckaman received his Bachelor of Music Degree from Lamar University.
His bands have won numerous UIL Sweepstakes awards and competitions at the state level. This includes six bands in the UIL State Marching Contest and five bands in the TMEA State Honor Band Contest with twice being named state champion runner-up. Since 1998, his groups have advanced to the state finals of the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series twenty-six times which includes four OPS state titles and five OPS state runner-up titles.
Mr. Heckaman actively serves as a clinician and adjudicator across the state. His professional affiliations include: Phi Betu Mu International School Bandmaster Fraternity, Texas Music Adjudicator’s Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Association of Texas Small School Bands and has served as region coordinator for ATSSB.
Mr. Heckaman met his wife Michelle of 20 years while attending Lamar University where she served as flute section leader. She teaches choir in Dayton ISD, and they have twin sons, Aaron and Andrew, who are beginning their first year in college.
